The standard way to write the numeral 4 is IV. But the way it is usually shown on a sundial is IIII. There are several possible explanations:
a. Four I's give a clock face balance.
b. Four I's to indicate 4 was the common usage before the middle ages, when sundials
were made.
c. In Roman time, IV stood for the supreme God Jupiter ("IVPITER") and it would have
been blasphemy to put it on a clock.d. IV is difficult to read upside down.

7. a Capon -- If I had thought about it just a few seconds longer I would have had this.
