Of the 29 million tons of solid waste generated in 2001, 35.7% was paper, 12.2% was
yard waste, 11.4% was food scraps, 11.1% was plastic.
Thirty percent of the entire waste stream was recycled, recovered, or composted. The
rest was either incinerated or landfilled.
Now, if the EPA would revisit this today, the percentages would probably be a lot different.
