Kmart opened in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan. Seventeen more stores were added that
year.
Wal-Mart opened in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas.
Both stores gave strong competition to Sears (which opened it's first store in 1925), with
Wal-Mart eventually taking the lead. Sears and Kmart merged in 2005.
