yup. in an early episode, kirk was shown his tombstone that read james r. kirk.

tiberius became his standard name later on.

the "r" was in the second pilot for the show, "where no man has gone before". it ended ip being aired as episode #3.

We watched that episode today. In fact, as soon as I read what you wrote about the grave marker saying "James R Kirk," James immediately knew the episode.
