Hey texasgirl, do you like raisins or even craisins? I bet either of those would work.

Keep in mind the dates she uses are the sugared chopped dates. So, think of that consistency. Not a wet medjool date. Alix - great ideas!
You know what might be fun is perhaps dried apricots, chopped finely, with a bit of sugar. Or, you could go a more "jkath" route and take some good lemon peels and candy them.
