CANADA - Montreal

We are going to Montreal for a long weekend towards the end of July. I would appreciate your recommendations for great places to eat while we're there.

I have a friend who lived there. I'll ask her what she recommends. For a start I can tell you to hit Old Montreal. You will find some really wonderful stuff there.

My dad used to rave about a restaurant he went to when he was a young navy boy. I wonder if it is still there? I'll post here in a day or so with my friends recommendations.

I've spent a good amount of time in Montreal. Honestly, I can't remember the name of any one restaurant I've been to though. I know Rue St. Denis had a great Spanish restaurant up the hill from McGill University on the right hand side (as you look up the hill). And there was a particularly good place not too terribly far from the Botanical Gardens and Montreal Olympic Stadium. Again, I'm sorry I can't remember the name.

Oh yeah, and Chinatown had some delicious eats and the shopping's a hoot too!

Try any mom and pop's. Odds are, if it's out of the way, you won't be dissatisified!

There are NO shortages of fantastic places to eat....everone hit the nail on the head with going to Old Town. Just look around, and often the most unassuming places are the most fantastic.

One place that I remember, but not the name, was a very unassuming 'quaint' bistro type place. The menu was several chalkboards hung through the various rooms.

I had the most delectable confit du canard I can ever recall eating. And, trust me, duck is something I love. This topped anything! Of course, it could have been the company ~ amongst friends, the wine ~ aplenty, or just a combination of all the planets in line.

So, you really can't go wrong. Unless you stop off at Le Mickey D's, but I would hope you've better things on your 'to do' list.

I should mention we were there once before about 4-5 years ago. We visited Old Montreal and toured St. Catherine Street.

Not all our restaurant choices were the best. We did go to Gibby's for a very good dinner and to a breakfast spot called Eggspectations that offered a decent breakfast.

Well probably visit the casino this time.

I wish I had some suggestions for you Andy. The only times I have been there I don't think we ate very much. It was mostly just liquid lunches (and dinners and probably breakfasts). We would spend all of our time in the various bars and clubs on St. Catherines Street.

That is the beauty of Canada Andy. The drinking age is 18 and they do not card very hard.

Oh yes. I was born and raised in Montreal, and miss it dearly. For breakfast, I love La Mere Poule ( I think it's on Avenue Parc). In Olod Mtl, Mondavie has great lamb dishes. Yup, Schwartz's or Ruebens for Mtl smoked meat. The Mtl Pool Hall on St Laurence for steamed hot dogs. Au Pied du Cochon ( on Duluth), Joe Beef ( on Notre Dame W), and Toque! (Old Mtl).. Although I haven't been to them, friends have, and gave great reviews. The Plateau area is wall to wall restaurants. Marche A****er has some great deli's etc. Many of the restaurants are BYOB, so if you're making a reservation, you may want to ask them. Le Faubourg on Ste Catherine has a great bagel shop, you can watch them making the bagels. If I think of anything else, I'll be back!

I am not sure if this is the same shop, but Anthony Bourdain went to a bagel shop in Canada and was very skeptical. No one can make bagels like they make in NY. Well after he tasted one he still did not think they were like NY bagels exactly, but he still thought they were amazing. Worlds better than he had expected.

I think he probably went to either the St Viateur or Fairmount ones, they're institutions in Montreal.
Another one to add is Milos ( Ave du Parc). They have great seafood, and their grilled octopus and calamri are wonderful. If you happen to go by a SAQ ( their liquor stores) stop in and check out the Ice Cider. I'm had a few really nice ones.

Dun's, Schwartz are famous for their smoked meat
Moishes, an incerdible steak house
Au pieds de cochon, European cuisine with canadian products
Chez Toké...for an experience that is hard to forget.
