We're planning a trip to Vegas this March, maybe 3-4 days.

I was there 4 years ago and had the buffets at the Bellagio and Paris Hotels. Both were fantastic but Bellagio surpassed my high expectations.

Needless to say, we're gonna do the Bellagio buffet again this time. But does anyone have other recommendations? Also, need ideas for good cheap places to eat there, when we're all buffet'd out.

Would also appreciate tips for good places to stay in that don't cost too much and are not too far from the action (as we won't have a car).

Thanks!

If you don't need fancy fancy places to sleep... try Circus Circus. It's pretty inexpensive and right on the strip.

Have fun!!!
And remember "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" !!

Do you like Sushi?

At the Caesar's Palace Forum Shoppes there's Sushi Roku. We ate there last August and it was outstanding.

The San Remo used to have the $4.95 prime rib, but now that they're chaning themes, I don't know if it's still there.

The Smiling Irishmen at New York New York is a wonderfule place for liquid (Adult) refreshments, as is the 777 brewpub downtown at the Main Street Casino. Terrible's Casino (off the strip) is supposed to have great deals, as well.

Good ideas, folks... And I think I'll save that link, Dina. It's good info for locals, too.

I can personally vouch for the 75-cent Hot Dogs from the cart in the Gold Coast. The dog is good sized and served on a steamed bun. They offer toppings of chopped onion, pickle relish and sauerkraut and you add the salt/pepper and ketchup/mustard. While I like various combinations, my most recent topping was onion/relish with a little mustard/ketchup and pepper. MMMmmm

Also at the Gold Coast they have a good ice cream parlour.

Speaking of ice cream, one of my favorite desserts on the Strip is at the New York, New York hotel/casino inside the ESPNzone. They bake a big chocolate chip cookie in the bottom of a 10" round iron pan, then let it cool slightly before adding vanilla ice cream scoops and chocolate sauce. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

I also like the menu at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville at the Flamingo. I would recommend the "Volcano" nachos or anything else on the menu that strikes your fancy.

.

We like the French Market Buffet in the Orleans. They have seafood night on Tuesday, king crab legs, peel & eat shrimp, oyster on the half shell etc. We were just in Las Vegas the first part of February & I didn't find the hot dog cart mentioned at Gold Coast. Wish I had though.

Nine Fine Irishmen Irish Pub in New York New York is one of my favorites!
(Try the cheese & fruit appetizer)
Also there is Gallagher's Steak House - very tasty!

The Rio is considered one of the best buffets in Vegas, but it is not on the strip so you will have to take a cab unless your driving. Caesars has an excellent buffet and on fridays offer lobster. For Italian at a great price go to
"Batista's Hole In The Wall" located in a shopping strip behind the Flamingo.
I love Vegas.

That's odd. It's not a really big place. The cart is located in the Race & Sports Book.

Here's a pretty good web site with several restaurants and their menus (including prices). It's clearly not complete, but you can search by cuisine or by neighborhood.

Oh... and I think the Rio is walking distance from the Strip. There is also a shuttle at Harrah's.

Thanks to everyone for all the tips! Especially to Dina for that great link. Am crossing my fingers that we'll push through. Flight and hotel reservations have been made... All the great tips above have been noted down. Leaving 3 weeks from now if all goes well. Wish us luck!

Used to be, the *Excaliber was an inexpensive place to stay. After a few drinks though, all the castles look alike & we had a little trouble finding the room  The Boardwalk was great for a hot dog and a beer (if you like beer). It's been awhile but, the husband & wife that worked there had us in stitches, arguing with each other. (They were only joking.) Have a great trip, Chopstix. :)

*When I asked the reservationist on the phone, why the room didn't have a bath (only a shower), she said:

"Because, we don't want you in the room. We want you in the casino."

Note to self: Make New Year's Eve reservations early.

Frommer's is the best, IMO

The Z -I didn't go in the Race & Sports Book area. We went one day to the down town area, had a 99 cent shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate, its served in a sundae glass, about a cup of small shrimp with cocktail sauce on top, No celery or fillers.

Thanks Mish! The frommer's link is great! :)

You're very welcome, Chopstix. :) One of the things I like about Frommer's, is that he? gives you the low-down on everything - rather than just prices and ratings. We found some terrific restaurants (Mom & Pop and off-the-beaten path), when I went to San Francisco. Have a great trip, take lots of pictures and tell us everything you ate.

PS I read what he said about most of the restaurants, and think he's right on the money.

Oooooh Las Vegas!! Been going there a couple of times a year since the late 80's (wow-I am getting old!)
for the most part, the strip is too spendy. For a great breakfast, go downtown to the Golden Gate-they have a little cafe in there where you can get your breakfast cooked to order-20$ for 2 people including tip. They also happen to be the home of the famous LV shrimp cocktail 2.99 (get the Jumbo) spicy and delicious!
If you prefer a buffet, the Main Street Station has got a great one (especially for breakfast)
And My wife and I would'nt even consider leaving Las Vegas without a trip to Binions Ranch steakhouse-all glass dining room on the 24th floor, casual dress is OK. The food is fabulous-I always get a blackened ribeye, my wife gets the ChickenFried Lobster. While it is'nt cheap, we usually get out of there for 130.00$, including drinks and a generous tip. And for what its worth, no matter where you are seated, the view is breathtaking! (be sure to go after dark)
Do your homework and listen to the locals-if you cant find a place to eat in the valley-your not hungry!!!
