We were at Treasure Island hotel/casino in LV this past week and they were serving a "frozen" rum n' coke. Sort of a rum n' coke daquiri for lack of a better description.

We have a Margaritaville frozen drink shaver/blender, but I'm pretty sure that putting a carbonated beverage (coke) in it will result in a mess. These things were pretty tasty - reminded me of the Coke flavored "icees" we got as kids.

Any thoughts on how to make this work at home? It occured to me to buy a bottle of coke, open it and let it go flat, but theres got to be a better way.

Sooo-I thought I'd check with the wisest folks I know-you guys/gals!!

Any ideas???

Mix up a rum and coke and put it in the freezer. The alcohol will keep the coke from solidifying and will turn it into slush.

Or can't you just put it in a blender and blend with alot of ice to get it slushy ?

That was my first thought, but don't you think that soda (coke) in a blender would make it "fizz up" like when you shake a bottle before opening it?

Same principle as those buckets of margarita mix you buy at the store. You just throw it in the freezer for your party, and when ready just take it out and serve. The alcohol keeps it from freezing completely.

We just used to add rum to the 7 11 Slurpees. Very good.

Ok-now we're getting somewhere. What do they use for flavoring in the coke slurpees? Is there a syrup or something (without carbonation) available?

Although I do like your idea Mav. Mix it, freeze it and scoop it. Would be nice to be able to make them in a pinch. My family likes to "overdo" things sometimes.......

Thanks, but actually it was GB's idea first, LOL.

I remember as a kid you could get your own little machine that came with the syrup and carbonated water. You would then mix it to make pop. I have no idea if they are still around anymore or not.

Treasure Island is famous for that drink (Mandalay Bay has them too.) I've tried to figure out the formula at home and it never works out (always tastes flat.) The closest I've come is with a regular rum and coke, but use lots of shaved ice instead of cubes. A dash of bitters and live wedge and you're good to go.

Yum SK.... I'm commin over!!!! Get a coke flavored slurpee like PDswife suggested, add rum!

Try this.. might work.

Put the rum in the freezer.. the colder the better. Mix with the ice and make a thick slushy, add the coke. the hyper cold rum should ice down the coke helping it to freeze.

I worked in a convenience store, not 7/11, but we served something called "Mr. Freeze". It was basically a giant snow cone machine with flavoured syrups, like Coke, cherry, etc. Anyway, the Coke you get in restaurants is basically just coke syrup and CO2. So, you could go to a restaurant supply store, by a jug of coke syrup, freeze it with the rum and then add club soda to it!

Or, go to 7/11....

You know, I forgot I posted this, and just ran across it. I concur RUM1-I've tried several variations and none are exactly right (didn't stop me from drinking them though  )

I have to wonder if the key isn't so much in the ingredients but in the machine. A cursory check on ebay for a used Icee machine tells me I've got my work cut out for me if I'm gonna justify buying one to Mrs SK!!
