Well, Goodweed of the North? You have peaked the interest of several of us to showcase the splendor of various fungi! And you seem to want to throw your hat in the ring as well.

Let's get the show on the road. Are you going to pass organizing responsibilities to someone else? I won't take it on as I am really ready to rock on this one.

As for the problems with posting, I think if there was a range of a couple of days like Monday such and such at 12 am to 11:59 pm on Wednesday such and such. Then polls open for 3 days.

As for courses, I would like to go with the ones we had last time - appetizer, main, dessert and drink. How do the other contestants feel about this?

LOL ...you all. I've got ideas for everything but the beverage.

I'm good with the same courses and I like the idea of post-by day or post-between days rather than a post-on day.

I agree with Kathleen that we need all the rules and parameters spelled out before we start.

Yup, I agree about the rules too. I also think we should find out who is making up the rules since we all seem to be in the contest (Glad to hear you are on board, Dave!).

I think it would be a good idea to ditch the polls and just have everyone appreciate the work and effort people put into the dishes without feeling judged or competitive.

I understand what you are saying Frank. But IMHO, friendly competition pushes people to try just a bit harder, and gives those who go the extra step, a feeling of accomplishment. And, it's fun. I mean, two chess players play a game against each other, both learning from the experience, no matter who wins. I use to have great fun on my rod-hockey game when I played a particular cousin who was as good at the game as I was. We had a great time, creating our own play-by=play sportscasting as we moved the puck from player to player and scored. No one got their feelings hurt, and the game was exciting. My youngest sister, on the other hand, was a sore loser and we didn't play the game together very often because of it.

This contest should be like a friendly game, exciting, and with no real winners or losers. Life is full of competition. It's what makes playing games enjoyable. We just need to understand that everyone who plays is a winner, no matter what the poles. If I lose this next challenge, the mushroom themed one, I am not really losing. It just means that I need to step up my creativity a bit. And we also need to remember that everyone's tastes are different. Just because my chili didn't win the cookoff last year doesn't mean it wasn't darned good chili, it simply means that the judges had a taste for someone else's recipe. I need to tweak my own recipe for next year, try something a little more traditional for the area that I live in.

This contest is a contest by which we all should learn and grow in our cooking abilities, and should one person have great results, we can congratulate, and take notes.

I like the competition aspect of the challenge. But it's up to everyone who participates, or wants to participate. And, there is the cook-together thread that is non-competitive. Those who don't want to be judged can participate in that thread. Those who want some competition in their lives can compete in this thread.

Again, this is MHO. I will go with the majority.

Two questions: Does this mean that we will have to post on a specific day? If so, I cannot do it.

For people who work, Sunday would be better because then they would have Saturday to prep and Sunday to cook. Just my two cents.

My second question is: Is the ingredient MUSHROOMS or does Fungus count?

Just my 2-cents here:

It does not really matter to me if we have a voting poll or not. I'm not "competing" against anyone except against my self. It is fun for me. It IS challenging me; I am thinking about flavor combinations I haven't thought of before (both with this challenge and the last one) and trying to put that all together into a cohesive meal is really making me think flavors and textures.

As for posting, I think we should have things posted by a certain date.

What others create and post isn't going to change my menu ideas or my decision to participate. It is fun seeing what everyone one comes up with and how they interpret the challenge ingredient. I'm going to do what I can with what I have, what's available and what I can afford and see where that takes me and what I come up with.

I'm in for this challenge no matter what is decided.

I have a few thoughts here (and remember, these are my thoughts, I am not saying it should be this way).

Due Date - for me, I look at it that this is a virtual contest and not a one hour program where everything has to be conceptualized, prepared and served on the spot. I am thinking I will probably do one course at a time so that I can concentrate on that until I have it the way I want it, photograph it, share it with my hubby and make notes while it is fresh in our minds. Then on my next free day I will do another course. So that when the due date comes along I will have it all done and ready to post. But that is how I want to do things. This way I don't feel pressure to get it all done at once (the last thing I need in my life is more pressure - I am doing this for some fun).

Also here, I agree that it should be due BY not ON. A three day range for posting might be a good idea for those who like to do it and are too excited to wait to post or can't be confined to a certain day. This has to be convenient and positive for everyone.

Voting - I like the idea of having the polls, as long as they are simple and allow for everyone to excel - it wasn't mentioned in the previous one that Betterthanabox actually won the dessert and there was a tie on the beverage! that is as important as the overall winner. The polls give non-participants a chance to actually participate. Comments are good, but the polls give them an opportunity to be "part of the game". That is really important.

Courses - I don't think we should be discouraged to participate if we can't come up with all the courses. Mimiz, if I read it right, you are not entering because what you would do for a dessert is too expensive for you. Then just enter the other courses you want to - in the previous contest there were polls for the individual courses. Maybe in the overall poll someone may mark you down for not having it (and I am not saying they should), but you are still participating and having fun.

Mushrooms/fungi - For me, I wouldn't be able to do what I want if it was limited to just mushrooms; however, if this is the case, I will just do the courses I can and have a blast anyway!

Okay, I am a contestant and am only one person. What I have said here is just my own humble opinion and will go along with the general consensus.

I am just really looking forward to doing this. And to see what others have up their sleeve.

PS Sorry for the novel....but at least I put it in chapters

I agree with both Dave and Laurie...they both make good points in their posts.

I am joining in on this competion, just because it sounds like fun! And I like mushrooms! I also agree that Fungi, should be included.

Goodweed I actually have edible gold in leaf and powder form. It has been used for golden wedding anniversaries (and the powder to make corner guards and locks on an old fashioned suitcase cake).

So, are you telling me I can't use these because I would have an unfair advantage? (Not that I am using them.....I'm just sayin' )

umm... please feel free to ignore the whine of a peon voter, but I'd like to suggest a longer window for it, maybe one week. I think there were DC members (sadly raising my hand) who wanted to participate and cast faves, but for individual reasons did not have the opportunity. More voters is always a good thing.

This has certainly been an interesting read while the game has come together.
When does Alton make an appearance?

Mimizkitchen, can we talk you into joining even if you decide not to make dessert?

Anyone else?

Remember the main point of this is to challenge yourself and to have fun!
I want to participate, but cannot commit until I see it all spelled out.

1. Exactly what courses will need to be made.
2. How is the posting to be done (b/c if there is a window, I'm not joining due to unpredictable job constraints. If there is a deadline by which to have all posted, then all is good.)
3. What should be in the posts.

Sorry to be such a stickler about this but I do not want to see any hard feelings this time around.

Mimi, please join. Molds and yeasts are also fungi along with mushrooms, and I believe they are all fair game!

Ok. You talked me into it. Here are the rules.

1. Submission deadline - March 12, 2011

2. The challenge will consist of 3 courses and something to drink
A. Appetizer - can be soup, finger food, salad, crostini, bruschetta, etc.
B. Main Course - must contain a meat, or meat substitute, veggie, starch
or have each in a one-pot meal
C. Dessert
D. Beverage -Anything Liquid, including smoothies, shakes, juices,
cocktails, etc.
3. Food may be prepared any time between today and the deadline.

4. Pictures, recipes, cooking technique, and evaluation will be included with
the submission.

5. Submissions will be posted at the contestant's convenience, but no later
than March 12.

6. Entries will be judged on presentation, best use of the theme ingredient,
Description of the food, and creativity.

7. Anybody who does better than G.W. gets a virtual snowball fired in their direction by G.W.'s virtual giant slingshot that can hurl boulder sized projectiles from coast to coast. Just ask BuckyTom.

8. Rule 7 is to be disregarded as the ravings of a madman.

9. Contestants must have fun.

Seeeeya; Goodweed of the North

It is looking like it will be a really great field of entries and I encourage anyone else to come on board as well.

Oh, and I like Spork's idea of the one week poll time. As long as it is kept in for forefront so people do vote.
LOL...thanks Laurie. The only thing that would keep me out would be a time constraint. I dread these next few months at work.

Oh, I do love that as our theme song!

I would hope so! A main course is a main course!

BTW, when will you include me on a mushroom hunt???

Dave,

While I am not competing I should think the answer to both is yes.
