When I was a kid, we always used to catch "crawdads" and use them for bait. We even went so far as to make a seine out of a window screen to catch them. Of course, the mesh was so fine, we caught everything else, including algae, which clogged the mesh up. I actually saw a crawfish, about 6" in total length, and bright BLUE, swim right over the top of the mesh and between my legs, and escaped out into the next pool.
