So... I assumed that dried fruit lasts forever and I just made a batch of banana bread with dried figs in it that are old... at least 5 years old. After a quick search on google for their shelf life I realized they only last a couple years at best.

So have I just ruined a batch of bread? How do you know when they're no good? Do they taste bad, will we get sick? I hate wasting food, so they've been sitting around so long until I found a recipe to use them in.

Welcome to DC!

I would agree, no mold or bugs, you're good.

Dried fruit has been found in the tombs of Egypt. It was very, very dry. If you had plumped the figs a bit, they probably would have been fine. I've had dried fruit and nuts in my freezer for years and if it seems dry, I soak them a while and use them.
