They have expiration dates on the back.

There should be an expiration date on it. I think it it's too old, the yeast won't wake up, but maybe someone else will know for sure.

if it doesn't foam, it's not good hence the term "proofing the yeast" which means proving it works. If the package says it is still good and it doesn't rise, than it's no good. Keep yeast in the refrigerator to prolong its life
