Shrimp Paste Verbal Description Challenge

Can some try and describe the taste of Shrimp Paste, without using the word shrimp ( or its equivalent) in the description ?
(For example, Shrimp paste taste like ground up Shrimp. (This wouldn't help me at all ))

I use it as an ingredient in Thai curry pastes. It gets slightly cooked before use. I have never tasted it on its own. So, I can't describe the taste.
