Most Amish people of Pennsylvania are trilingual. They speak a dialect of German called Pennsylvania Dutch while at home and among themselves. Their church services are given in German. Children are taught English in school, and English is often spoken when in the company of others.

TRUTH !!
in 2004, the last year that complete numbers are available, the big apple reported 26,683 incidents of violent crime, and 80,796 incidents of property crime.
los angeles was the number two hot spot, with 21,665 violent and 64,950 property crimes reported.
in both cities, the highest category of violent crime was aggravated assault, (as opposed to murder, forcible rape and robbery).

This is a "just curious". The crime statistics mean nothing if you don't put it into a population context. Obviously, my town of 3500 couldn't possibly support 80,000 + crimes. Stastics lie, and liars use statistics (I do not mean you, just your sources). Unless someone says "XXX# of violent crimes per XXXXXX# of people, it is a meaningless number. Yes, it is the highest number. But NYC is the highest population city in the US. LA is #2. Chicago #3. But it means nothing until you do it per capita. Even then it is difficult. For example, Washington DC stats for crime. Do they include the parts of DC that are in Virgina and Maryland? Nowadays most of these cities encompass so many other towns that USED TO BE separate cities and towns. Are they included, or not? THe numbers look scary, but really -- if you take the numbers of good restaurants, great homes for seniors, acres put aside for parks (you could fit my town in Central Park and have land leftover), etc., well, LA and NYC look BETTER than everywhere else.

point well made, claire.

the numbers writer of the source article concerned himself only with police blotter numbers, irregardless of population totals.
