When the USTTA was officially organizing the game in 1933, it wanted to use the more popular name, Ping-Pong, but Parker Brothers, who produced what they called a "Ping-Pong Paddle set", wanted too much money for the rights. As a cost-saving measure, the organizers settled on the name "Table Tennis".
