One fine day in 1876, Lord gromley Whiffle was participating in a golf tournament on St.0 Andrews old course. As spectators watched, he completely missed the ball on a four-inch putt. Astonished, the crowd asked one another, "did you see that whiffle putt?" In no time, Whiffle's name became synonomous with missing the ball, and the term was eventually shortened to "Whiff".
Whiffle missed more than the ball that day; the lost stroke cost him the silver cup.
