Soldiers in Khan's army were turned into executioners after each victory.
The inhabitants of each defeated town were ordered to assemble outside the walls of the town, and each Mongol soldier, armed with a Battle Ax, was assigned to kill as many as fifty of the captives.
As proof that they made their quota, the soldiers would chop off the left ear of each of their victims. The ears were carried in a sack back to their officers to be counted.
