James Smithson, a British mineralologist, wrote in his will that his estate should go to "the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men."
In 1838, the U.S. received his gift- more than 100,000 gold Sovereigns, which was in excess of $500,000 in U.S. current. Smithson, who was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Northumberland, was thought to have been less than happy with his British homeland
