They aren't plants at all! Lichens are fungi that usually grow where plant's won't, on rocks, particles of desert sand, the dried bones of dead animals, and even on old rusty metal. Extremely adaptable to all sorts of weather conditions, they can slow down their metabolic processes to survive extremes of heat and cold.
