The American billion is smaller than the British billion.
The US billion refers to a thousand million, and written out like this; 1,000,000,000
The British billion refers to one million million, and looks like this;
1,000,000,000,000

It does seem a little counter-intuitive. In this global economy we are experiencing, a billion can't have different meanings.
