The wife of the fourth President of the USA was a renowned entertainer and the first to serve ice cream in the White House. However, according to a 1978 history published by the International Association of Ice Cream Manufacturers, it was a freed black slave, Aunt Sallie Shadd, who gets the credit for inventing ice cream as we know it. Dolly Madison brought Sallie's product to the White House.
