Wikipedia having a fundraiser - opinions?

It's asking for money to save it's life..

Is this a Good Thing in our opinion?

Don’t look for the light at the end of the tunnel. Stomp along and switch the bl**dy thing on yourself.

That they need to ask or that they are asking?

It's a reality. This isn't the first time they've asked for money.

I'm willing to shell out the $20 a year to keep Wikipedia ad free. They've helped me out a fair bit.

Every non-profit is asking for money this time of year. I don't know what it's like in the UK, but in the US, if you itemize your taxes, whatever you give to charity before the end of the year can be deducted on your next tax return.
Anyplace where people argue about food is a good place.

I have no problem with it. Like any business (non-profit or not), it does cost money to run Wikipedia.

One can choose to donate or not. The alternative is that they may have to eventually go to an ad-based revenue model, and, I don't know about the rest of you, but I sure get tired of seeing ads everywhere. I use Wikipedia quite a bit, and if I can kick in a little money once in a while to help them avoid that scenario, I really don't mind.
