You are right GQ. Between the cake and the topping, that is three-quarters a teaspoon of ground cloves. McCormick's puts out a mixed spice for apple and one for pumpkin pie. I would go with either one of them. I am not fond of clove flavor. Both of the pie mixtures have the same spices as this recipe, and the pumpkin having more. A bit more spicier than the apple mix, but not at spicy if there were cloves.
