Ms. Mofet's Deconstructed Shepard's Pie (Cottage Pie)

Serves 4 or 5
Total prep: 15 minutes
Total cook time: 15 minutes


  • 1 1/2 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion - chopped
  • 1 envelope dry brown gravy mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup burgundy wine
  • 2 cups frozen mixed veggies

  • 5 - 6 medium potatoes - peeled & cubed
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 3 TBSP butter
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Sea salt - to taste
  • Ground peppercorns - to taste
  • Chives - fresh chopped or dry - to taste

  • Additional shredded cheddar - optional

  1. Brown beef and onions in pan.
  2. Drain off fat if necessary.
  3. Add dry gravy mix to pan and stir well.
  4. Add water and wine; stir well and cook till thickened.
  5. Add frozen veggies and stir. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Place potatoes in pot of salted water and boil till tender.
  7. Drain and mash potatoes.
  8. Add sour cream and butter and stir well.
  9. Stir in cheddar cheese, salt, pepper and chives.
  10. Place mound of potatoes on plate and make a well in the middle to form a cup.
  11. Spoon meat mixture into cup/well.
  12. Top with additional cheese if desired.

That does look good. I do the same thing with a slice or two of meatloaf with gravy. My family calls them nests. I don't include chives in the potatoes since my husband won't eat something if he can see what he thinks are onions.

Thank you everyone.

I started making it this way because the original way had the taters and cheese on top and then you baked it. It was wonderful. BUT leftovers were a pain to reheat because taters are dense and take awhile to reheat. By the time the taters were hot the meat and veggies were overcooked. This way you can reheat the meat and veggies and taters separately OR make fresh mashed the second day.

You can always grind the chives in a food processor.

Yup nice on a cold day or whenever the feeling hits you. It's quick and easy.
