Pan-cooking steak question.

ok, I have read that when you pan cook steak, you should cook it on high. I have put it on high before only for it to burn rather quickly (the outer surface). Looks pretty ugly. but not just looks...I mean like charcoal burnt. Is this how your really suppose to do it?
 
you should cook it on the stove with a high flame to sear the juices. you probably only need a couple minutes on each side. after that i would transfer it to an oven to finish.
