CRAP !!
One of the punishments available to Jewish judges (and to the Sanhedrin in
Jesus' time) was forty or fewer lashes. Deuteronomy 25:3 (KJV) provided
"Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed." The Jewish practice,
however, was to limit lashings to 39 in order not to accidentally or
negligently exceed the number permitted by the Law. In the New Testament,
Saint Paul describes being punished in this manner: "Of the Jews five times
received I forty stripes save one."
