Definitely worth it. I picked up a cheap oven & fridge thermometer at - I don't know, KMart or something. Was definitely worth the few bucks I paid for it. It now resides in the fridge where it keeps me abreast of current temps in there.

As far as the rising factor - always make sure you're using fresh baking powder. Always check the expiration date - that's been my downfall sometimes. And always "proof" your dry yeast. I don't do a lot of baking, & sometimes I'm dismayed to find my baking powder &/or dry yeast expired long ago - lol!

When making things from scratch... which biscuits is about the only thing I have tried and finally gave up and opted for a box of Pioneer mix (similar to Bisquick), they never would rise or turn out extremely dense. I did make a pie crust that turned out good. But anything that has to rise, I can't seem to find the trick. As for the oven temp... you may be right. I may try and check it out and see how far off it is. Me and dough don't get along very well.

You don't understand.... I can't bake anything like crackers, biscuits, I even have problems with boxed cakes. Not sure why!

That's a darn good question. One I don't have an answer for. Seems I may have heard the term at some time but, have never seen any or eaten any.(That I was aware of) I know of and have eaten Poke Salat numerous times, and enjoyed it. ...I'm not sure if it (Field Cress) even grows around here...then again It may be growing along my fence lines...Maybe some other "local" name. I dunno.

Strong's Neck, Setauket - & boy do I miss the fresh seafood since moving here to Virginia. Although that's pretty much the only thing I miss about NY. Husband is from Nissequogue/St.James - but not the "elite rich" part - lol!! Actually, both of us grew up when those areas were open to & fun for one & all - not a friggin nose-in-the-air privelige - lol!!

    Where are you located?
