CRAP !!
Originally, the Apollo 9 mission profile was planned to be flown before the
Apollo 8 one, but delays in development of the lunar module caused the two
to be switched so that the target to have an astronaut set foot on the moon
before the end of 1969 could be maintained. The so-called "D" mission was
the first test of the lunar module and the focus was on the needed tight
maneuvers to dock and undock the lander. The mission also tested the life
support unit that would later be used during the moonwalks. While Russell
Schweickart, lunar module pilot on the mission, suffered from extensive
space sickness during the first two days, the mission was flown to
completion and was deemed so successful that a second planned orbital test
could be skipped.
