Hi. I have always wondered. Say you want to move to a new city. You need a place to live, so you check out the rooms to rent section on craigslist. You have to be physically present to see the place to see if something you like. But, when you are a woman, this can be dangerous, going into houses like that. But you don't know anybody in this new city to go with for protection. So how would a woman be able to see her new place in a safe manner?

Thanks.

What country are you moving to?

There are cultural norms that are different in different countries. You might ask family and friends and neighbors where you are, if they know anyone in the new city that could escort you while you are looking at homes/apartments.

You could attach yourself on facebook to the new community and see if there are people with same interests as you have, or similar age groups, or community groups you might want to join and learn from there.

Rather than using craigslist, contact rental agencies, property brokers, or the like.

If you have a friend who could accompany you, in return for expenses, that might be worth the cost.

These are excellent suggestions.

I agree with the suggestions above. One I might add, if possible, maybe go visit the city first. Take a look around. If you are a person of faith, join a church or congregation in the city. Get to know some people there in advance. Friends of mine did that a couple of years back. They got such great help when time for the move happened! There were a dozen or so volunteers helping them unload the moving truck. Very heartwarming and made the move so much easier. And, they already had a "network" of friends to welcome them!

you have to know the city and the safe areas before moving there. It's a challenge.
