I bought a picnic pork roast, this might be a silly question but
is this cut the same as the butt roast? I have not taken it out of the
package yet, before I do I wanted to be prepared on how I was going to
cook it. I searched and really did not find a definate answer.

I think it's the ham, which is the rear leg of the hog. It is often referred to as a fresh ham (not cured).

The (Boston) butt is the front shoulder of the hog.

OOPS!

I was wrong. The picnic is at the front end of the animal.

Thanks for the info Aurora.

That's a pretty good chart on the link Aurora posted. Sometimes the picnic roasts are available in the market I go to when the butt isn't. I braise them slowly for a few hours, then pull the meat.

The "picnic" is the lower part of the shoulder (butt) and is perfect for making pulled pork BBQ or any long braise dish. It is not a high heat roasting cut.
