Tanzanite is the blue/purple variety of the mineral Zoisite which was discovered in the Meralani (Merelani) Hills of Northern Tanzania in 1967.

Since 2002, there's been what some say is a marketing ploy to make Tanzanite the official gemstone for December on the "modern" birthstone chart.
