Today is ' Mahalaya'. Today we chant the hymns to request goddess Durga to descend in Earth to destroy all evils. After seven days is Durga puja starts.

It is a custom to bath in the holy river Ganges to wash all sins and ready to wellcome Maa Durga. (Although now generally older people go to take the bath)

Thank you

You possibly know that we still have divisions of castes in our religions. It is very shameful to tell that the food varies for different castes.

We are 'Shakto Brahmin' so it is customary to eat mutton today. The lower castes will have veg meal today.

If you can, I would love to know and understand more about your holiday.
