I would suggest putting it in the pot with enough...

I would suggest putting it in the pot with enough cold water to cover it, and break it up before cooking it. Then add the rest of the water and cook.

This is how a lot of Greek style chili recipes...

Deep frying is an option, but it will probably have a crust all around. Not a tough crust, but a crust nonetheless. That's also an awful lot of fat considering that you have cheese and sausage too....

But seriously, you could make tomato sauce with the tomatoes and garlic and freeze it. I like carrots in my chicken and egg noodles.

Sounds like a winner! If you want more garlic flavor, mince it, and add it later. I don't know how much difference it will make, but I always cook the tomatoes in the oil until they start to break up...
