My house jumped to conclusions

OK, I'll admit I'm not the best cook, but I'm getting better.

I have a tendency to set off the fire alarm and my boyfriend always jokes that he calls the fire department whenever I get ready to cook so they'll be prepared (never actually been called, just a joke).

Now my house has gotten into the game...
Today I opened up a steak to marinade it for later...as soon as I opened the package, the fire alarm went off. The oven wasn't even on yet.

NOTE: The alarm needs new batteries, I think... it did 3 shrieks and stopped

Parrotmiami, welcome to DC, and know that I feel your pain.

I was making pan fried potatoes one time. In our old house (old being the operative word), we had a security system with a smoke detector hard-wired to send a signal to the fire department. There was no smoke at all - I would know, I am asthmatic and it is one of my biggest triggers. However, the alarm went off and I ran to cancel but didn't know the signal had been sent. The alarm company couldn't phone me because of a glitch in the system (the signal tied up the line) so they phone my husband at work and my best friend. The worst part of it was I wasn't feeling well and was in a purple bathrobe and eating my potatoes when two fire trucks arrived sirens blaring. After I embarassedly told them what happened they said no problem but I was mortified. One of them said my potatoes smelled really good....and not burnt at all!

As the trucks were leaving my friend showed up all worried and said to call DH as he was frantic - he was also in the middle of teaching a class (computer programming) so the whole room was worried.

I remember this horror story every time I pan fry potatoes!

That's why the powers that be strongly suggest that you change you smoke alarm batteries every time you spring forward or fall back.

Ours wasn't on batteries, it was hardwired into the electrical system, but yes, for parrotmiami that could be the case!

I've had to reach up and unplug a hard-wired smoke detector more than once. Often, cleaning the oven will do the trick.

I have hardwired ones in my business and they still have batteries. If something sets them off I need to pull all the batteries and turn the breaker off.

That said, the one in my house kitchen got the battery pulled shortly after installation. Without an oven fan, no way can I leave it turned on.

Welcome to DC. I used to set off the alarm all the time, but have gotten better about it. Now I just burn myself all the time, so that is what they tease me about now. There is always something. It is something about fire I think...I used to work corners for racing, and the cars would always catch on fire at my corner! I am at least good at putting the fires out!

At least everyone knows when dinner is ready!

my alarm has a mind of it's on. goes off a lot. even with the exhaust fan on it will go off. maybe i should set the self cleaning for the oven. will change batteries as well. it make me crazy, even if the dish is not burning the silly thing goes off.

Some brilliant idiot set ours up outside the bathroom...we set it off every time we get out of the shower. It thinks steam is smoke...

I used to use that system until they changed the length of time we are in DST. I now use Dec 21 and June 21.
