Halloween Dinner 10-31

Our town was hit hard by the storm Sunday night. Significant power losses around town. As a result, Halloween has been postponed until Friday.

Our grandson and his family won't be coming for trick or treating and our traditional American chop suey dinner.

As a result, I'm going to make a recipe our granddaughter had in a restaurant for the first time last week and really liked, Carbonara.

I'm going to try a Serious Eats recipe I copied the other day. I'll use bacon because I like the smokiness.

Not many children near us so, we don't do the Trick or Treat thing..
Going to an early movie ( Victoria and Abdul ) and stopping into one of our favorite grills for dessert afterwards..

so... Inspired by GG's Saturday evening meal I am putting together a couple of boneless/skinless chicken thighs to serve with garlic mashed potatoes smothered in gravy.. That will hold us until dessert..

That was some good stuff! My FIL finished up the leftovers yesterday.

I made a big pot of posole verde yesterday - most is in my FIL's freezer, but we brought a quart home with us to have for dinner tonight. I'll make cheese quesadillas to go with it.

I don't normally do Halloween. Last year, since I was in a new house on a busy street, I gave it a shot. I bought 3 bags of candy, but only had ONE trick-or-treater. So I'm done with it.

This afternoon I'm pressing wine grapes, so I'm eating early. There was a discussion here on DC a few weeks ago about duck eggs. Since I hadn't bought any for a while, I got some on Saturday at the co-op, and that's what I'm having tonight. A two-duck-egg omelet stuffed with sauteed mushrooms and spinach, and topped with herbed butter. The co-op also had heirloom tomatoes for sale, so that was my side dish.

There are 3 children of trick or treating age on our street, and we're fairly isolated. If someone is going to travel for candy, they won't be coming here. I don't expect many interruptions during dinner.

Swordfish on the grill, baked potatoes, salad.

GG inspired Ross, and now Ross has inspired me. That chicken dinner from Sat. sounds just right for us tonight.
Steve, it's been many years since I've had duck eggs, but I remember them being rich and delicious.

It's impossible to believe that I'm now baseball fan but the Dodgers have to win tonight! That incredible game on Sunday was the best game I've ever seen in my life!
If only they all could be that exciting!!

Andy, I'm sorry to hear your traditional family plans were postponed by the storm, and hoping power is soon restored to those without.

Ross, I'm waiting for 'Victoria and Abdul' to play at our theatuh out here in the middle of nowhere. I msged the manager a couple of hours ago and asked her if they expect to get the film, but haven't heard back yet. Will you please post your review in the "movies" thread?

Dinner here will be roasted shrimp with garlic lemon butter for dippin'. While I've got the oven on, sweet potato wedges and asparagus will be the sides. I was going to skewer the shrimp and grill them on the Weber, but decided not to as I'm expecting little ghosts and goblins to be knocking on the front door.

I bought two bags of decent size candy 1 reeses pb cups and 1 milky ways. And, if you are sitting down, No snickers for moi this year. No kids on my block, I think a few one block over. If kids come from farther afield, both they and I could be in trouble.

I usually make and did so again this year-- sloppy joes and potato chips. I suppose I could make some carrot sticks, for a Halloween color but that might make dinner seem too healthy.

Welp, DH has elected for another hernia surgery the Monday after Thanksgiving. Not much dancing in our future, but he is determined to get all things fixed now that he is on Medicare...yeah.

I went out to the store while the pork roast was in the crock pot last night and brought home a few potatoes to add to it. So now i Have a second meal of pork roast and potatoes I'm going to heat up tonight.

The city here closes off some streets and has the kids trick or treating from business to business, along with a wagon (and horses!) for hay rides. That by itself would be fine, but they also have a megaphone and a loud mouthed announcer playing stupid music in the street as well, about 200 feet from my window. He just started about half an hour ago and will probably go till 10.

It's gonna be a long Halloween.

I put in a very long day with no lunch break, and we grabbed BK on the drive back to the hotel. I don't fly out until 3:25 tomorrow afternoon, so we are going to get a good lunch before heading to the airport. I'll be dreaming of a fish feast tonight.

After 470 trick-or-treaters (according to my neighbor who picks up our mail when we're gone), we finally cuddled up to bowls of steaming Cuban black bean soup. I also baked up some Grands biscuits to have for mop-up duty. My dinner isn't anywhere near as pretty and colorful as the others photos here, but it sure hit the spot!

We had leftover vegetable beef soup and peanut butter crackers. Or, "bloody liquid soup and poopy brains crackers" as an 11 year old nephew once called it on a spooky Halloween night long ago.

Reminds me of my Dental Convention days.. Always planned to go to wonderful places to dine and seldom had the time to do so... Fortunately the hotels I stayed in, usually had good restaurants..

Been reading about this dish online... Most Italian blogs suggest that it be made with veal.. Some blogs suggest chicken or pork... I don't use veal but, would like beef...
Question... What meat do you use?.. Cube steak?...

No little ones near us, plus we live waaaay out in the country.

Halloween is also our wedding anniversary and, this year, we were invited to the home of some dear, dear friends for dinner.

Bernard and Annita are about the best friends anyone could want and were instrumental in helping me get through Buck's sudden and unexpected death.

Bernard also married Glenn and me so we have a special connection there.

We feasted on a salad of mixed baby and wild greens, along with mandarin orange sections and green onions. The salad was dressed in a simple mix of a rosemary-balsamic vinegar and a special olive oil Bernard bought at a new local olive oil shop. I don't dare go there. Could be overly tempting.

The main course consisted of a tender pork loin and sides of a tasty Brussels sprouts dish seasoned with bacon and garlic (yummy) and another dish of sauteed apples and sweet potatoes. Cranberry-nut rolls and a rustic cracked wheat bread filled in what little cracks there were.

As if that wasn't enough, dessert was a delicious pumpkin pie sweetened with honey.

Needless to say, we were sated. Or in Glenn's words, "Full as a tick."
