I purchased (via curbside) two cans of Walmart brand pet food in mid January that had bulging at the top and bottom. Then a few days ago I purchased (via curbside) four cans of Walmart brand canned vegetables, one of the the four had mild bulging at the top.

Is it safe to assume these are bad and should not be eaten? I've never seen anything like this with brand new canned food.

I also find this disturbing on so many levels. The bulging was so mild that the average person would probably overlook this. I have OCD so I notice stuff like this.

These cans were obviously manufactured or sealed at separate factories. So I'm wondering if something happened during shipping that would lead to this. I keep hearing about pallets of food and other items falling over in the trucks and getting damaged. I've heard of shipments having to sit out in the freezing cold all night.

Is this worth reporting to Walmart? The fact that I had bulging cans 2 weeks apart makes me wonder. I just hate to think that someone could end up getting sick.

Bulging sealed cans is usually a sign of botulism. DO NOT OPEN THE CANS! Return them to Wally World, and you might want to report it to your local health department.

+++!

I've never personally seen it, but definitely heard about bulging cans as being signs of possible botulism or spoilage of the food.

Not worth the risk.
Definitely bring it to their attention
Better safe than sorry.

Dunno about botulism, but a bulging can is DEFINITELY a sign of something very wrong inside!!
Run, do not walk to your Walmart and complain like mad!

I agree. They could have sat in in sun during summer reaching 100 deg F or higher, then frozen in warehouses or on trucks or on pallets in the back of the store.

Once they bulge, something is growing in there.

I agree with the rest. It is bad!

Once upon a time, my dad drank a can of tomato juice that he thought had a "bonus" of whole tomato in it. Nope, and he was very, very sorry. He ended up in the hospital and, if you knew my dad, that was one place he NEVER wanted to go!

So, for the sake of others, you never know who you might save! Please take it bake and complain. They need to educate their "pickers" too!

Thanks. They're not worth a chance they're not good.

Make the effort to both return them, but you should also complain.

A business not only shouldn't sell products like that (no matter if it was deadly or just an anomaly), and ypu shouldn't pay for it. But also the business needs to know that it is possibly selling deadly products.

Another thing, IF you do open a can and it comes oozing out or exploding out of the can, that's another big clue that it has gone bad. In case you didn't notice the bulge for some reason.

I've found a can or two that are bad over the years. I always take the opportunity to show it to hubby to remind him of what it looks like.

Thanks for the responses. I definitely was not going to use them.

I just thought it was extremely odd that I get 3 bulging cans in a 2 week period when I have never seen a brand new bulging can ever. One is human food and two are pet food. That's even more strange.

With the vegetables, it looks like I got two cans from the same factory, from the same day. The bulging can was stamped at 12:59 and the non-bulging can at 13:33.
