I want to try a "Cook Off" in this forum which does not have a winner or end date but is rather a collection of ideas and experiences with photos and instructions.

Here is a summary of what could be done. I took this idea from another forum which has died out a bit but thought it would work gret here.

The Cook-Off is intended to be a forum at which we all can cook the same dish and share our experiences in a non-competitive, collaborative manner:
  • something you've always wanted to make at home (and may enjoy out) but rarely have made, or haven't made successfully;
  • for which special but locatable ingredients may be used, but for which expensive special equipment is not required;
  • that includes techniques, ingredient combinations, or other elements that intrigue you;
  • from a different cuisine than that of the previous Cook-Off dish;
  • that demands some time and effort, but that rewards that effort for even those first approaching it; and
  • that motivates you to try it out, ask questions, serve it to friends, and share photos and stories.
As we cook and compare, we post our recipes, cooking ideas, instructions, and insight.

You're never too late for an DiscussCooking Cook-Off. While all have a specific starting time, none have an end time, and there are many of us eager to see what you will do with the cook-off recipes. So don't hesitate to contribute if you're finding this thread weeks or months after its start: by posting your own ideas, questions, or results, you can bump activity back up on this thread in no time!

If this is something that interest you and if you have ideas for the first "Discuss Cooking Cook Off" then post here. Any additional ideas are more than welcome, maybe I can start a thread the first of February.

Items to cook would be single items such as, (chili, pizza, fried chicken, lasagna, pad thai, etc.)

Let me know....

Well, you are going to have to teach me how to upload pictures to the site.

Very easy! Not really necessary BUT would be very helpful to other members trying to make the same dish. You can still reply and be involved by typing your results, as it is only a single dish. A grilled cheese sandwich could be the topic and only tests & trials typed would be great & may not need pics from every member.

If you need help uploading images let me know, we can PM and get it worked out.

Any ideas on what you may want to start with?

You do NOT have to have photos to be in the "Cook-Off", you only need to give your ideas and recipe instructions, what works and what does not.

This "Cook-Off" is all about trying to get the perfect recipe & technique for each person & to help others. No winners or losers!

Since the cooking contest is about to close do any of you have any ideas as what they would like to make for the first Cook Together?

Just looking for a single item such as fried chicken, chili, risotto, fries/chips, chowder, pizza. Single dish items that we can all try and post results of things that work and things that went wrong.

Post some ideas and we can make this happen!

Well, since St. Patrick's Day is coming up you might want to try corned beef and cabbage. Just a suggestion.

I am all about this cook together! Risotto is something I have always wanted to learn how to make.

BTAB, Risotto is a very easy dish to make... The thing to remember is the rice must be al dente, and it must spread on the platter... It's not as intimidating as some make it out to be... :):):)

I like the Fried Chicken theme for the cook-together. Could we seperate it into maybe three categories, such as fired chicken, oven fried chicken, and seasoned flour?

There are many herbs and spices that go well with chicken. There are Asian combinations like Chinese 5-spice, and a host of herbs to make everything from Tex-Mex to Southern to Cajun, etc. many people aren't familiar with creating or using spice blends. And though I know many, I know very little about say, India inspired flavors, or Morrocon. By playing with herb and spice blends with a particular meat, like chicken, we all have the chance to explore new and exciting flavor territories.

Didn't look at it that way, great point!!! It would be very interesting to see what other spices everyone adds to their flour to create their favorite fried chicken... You have got my creative juices going now... :LOL::LOL::LOL:

What about a pasta (lasagne) or vegetable-based dish? I'm sure there are vegetarians on the list who might also wish to participate.

Somebody needs to be moderator of this thread and choose a theme by which everyone who wants to can participate. I vote for the op to host the cook-together.
