I am considering making chocolate covered strawberries (if I can find some locally) for Valentine's Day. One of the recipes I'm looking at calls for 2 Tbsp of shortening. I have butter flavor Crisco and don't want to go buy regular shortening just to use 2 Tbsp. Would the butter flavor work?? I wonder if the formula is different.

Also, any easy chocolate covered strawberry recipes would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I can't imagine it would make a difference. Honestly I think (just my opinion) that "butter flavored shortening" is just a marketing trick with no noticeable difference in the final product. If I'm wrong and it does make a difference then it shouldn't do anything more than give your chocolate a slight buttery flavor, which wouldn't be bad.

I use it in cookies and breads (banana, pear) and it does have a buttery aroma to it and I think it does lend a good flavor to the final products. I think you are right, though about the chocolate coating...it shouldn't hurt. I may just give it a try. IF I can find some strawberries!;)

Chocolate Covered Strawberries for Valentines? ~~ Shoot, by the time you get deep into a bottle of Champagne, I don't think you'll notice any buttery flavor....or care!

New Crop Florida berries should be (or soon will be) available in larger chain stores....

I stand corrected then! I've never used it so I wouldn't know, it was just a guess. But I still don't think it will adversely affect your strawberries.

LOL, me and my sons won't be sharing any champagne this year. And with the way the weather is lately, I'll be lucky to see my fiance on my burf-day (22nd)!!

it should be fine. after all 2 tbsp isn't all that much.

If you want to do them ahead (instead of a fondue) you can just use a ganache recipe - they are very easy to make and so pretty.

Thank you all! I think (if I do this at all), I want to go with the hardened chocolate coating (using my butter flavor Crisco). I like the hard chocolate on the strawberries. I saw some strawberries at the store yesterday, but it was really too early to buy them for the weekend. If I make them I will update and let you know how they turn out!!

I'm not sure how hard your aiming for but the ganache dries to a firm consistency - not hard crack but about the consistency of fudge. In either case - post up some pics of the final product. I love lookin' at chocolate ;)

mY WIFE USES MARGARINE. i REALLY THINK EITHER OF PRODUCTS WOULD WORK WELL. Ooops, sorry about that.
I think important thing is to make sure the strawberies are good. becasue if they do nt taste good the whole job is a waste of time.

Good point! But, I am making them for a 14-year old and an 18-year old so it probably won't matter much. Although....my 18-year old seems to becoming something of a food critic lately...:ermm:

When I was a kid I was moe picky than I am now. Nowadays if I buy something and it is is not as tasty as I would like, I'd eat it just so not to waiste the money. back then I could not careless.
