First mint of the year!!! First mint visible, first day of spring! 3-20 by pepperhead212, on Flickr Patch of mint, first day of spring. by pepperhead212, on Flickr It was probably out there yesterday, but I didn't go out yesterday. And I look EVERY day I'm out there! That bed will be...

    Help Me Identify This Plant

I had a friend years ago that used to propagate those plants that way - I didn't remember them until you mentioned that method - laying the 2" pieces of stalks flat on the soil - @Roll_Bones! I never grew anything not edible, but she did, and that was the strangest way of rooting something I...

2023 Edition - What are you baking?

Sounds like that "Skeptoid Group" would also be the type that would tell us there's no global warming, and maybe no corona virus.

Be sure you wash those blueberries well, or buy organic - they were added to the Dirty Dozen in 2023, when the list was updated this month. https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/15/health/dirty-dozen-produce-pesticides-2023-wellness/index.html Some I can't figure out why they are sprayed with some of the...

    Petty Vents

That was a major task you undertook, @Marlingardener! Too bad it was a hopeless task. I've known a few like that in the past, but there a number of friends I not only got hooked on cooking, but a few of them on growing the food, too! That makes me think of a lot of those old cookbooks I...

2023 Edition - What are you baking?

I made another similar batch of potato rye these last two days, using a biga, started early Friday, and today, after dinner, I finished making the bread. It has almost 50% rye, plus about 1/3 c gluten, to make up for the high rye to WW ratio. A little to late to try it, but it smells...

    Garden 2023

I hope your peppers do better this year, Larry! You never figured out what the problem(s) was? Those "test" tomato seeds I started on 3-4 had 5 of the 9 varieties sprout, but the Aunt Lou Pink, Brandywine Cherry, Pearly Pink Cherry, and Ambrosia Red Cherry are the ones that didn't have any...

What's your weather like right now? 2023 Edition

At 10:30 pm the temp was only down to 57°, after getting up to 63° sometime this afternoon. It barely rained at all - not enough to wet the deck, just a few drops occasionally. Tomorrow it's only supposed to get to 54°, and start getting windy again. I'll get a little more done outside...

What's your weather like right now? 2023 Edition

It got up to 60° yesterday; still a little breezy, compared to the earlier part of the week, but I got some things done outside, and I'll do more today, since it is supposed to get warmer. However, by Sunday - the last full day of winter - 43° is the forecast high! This weekend I'll get some...

    Today's harvest

I also grew the asparagus from crowns, both times too, since I figured that's giving me a head start. I've considered doing it from seeds, but I don't know how that could be better.

2023 Edition - What are you baking?

Interesting article, @dragnlaw . I read a similar article, comparing the red and while hard wheat flours. Usually the white would be quite a bit more expensive, but in April 2020, when I bought that bucket of white hard wheat, it was only 50¢ more for the entire bucket, which is why I got it...

Kitchen "Candy" ~ Or, Look What I Just Got!

It should be ok with the coconut milk - I always had no problem using the same ratio to rice.

    Today's harvest

Like Larry, I have had no success with asparagus, and last season I dug up some 5 year old plants that just never got better. What I had last season was not much better than on the second season, and I never had enough to harvest.

2023 Edition - What are you baking?

It looks like it has mostly white flour, with some WW flour added. When I used white wheat berries (I bought 35 lb buckets of that and rye berries, at the beginning of the pandemic) to grind my own WW flour, the bread was still considerably darker than that, when 100% white WW.

Kitchen "Candy" ~ Or, Look What I Just Got!

@taxlady Those numbers on rice cookers usually refer to a measuring cup they give you (different from our usual measuring cup), and you put that many "cups" of the rice in, wash it well, then fill to that level mark in the cooker. That's obviously a better rice cooker, since jasmine doesn't...

Need to identify these six greens

#1 I can't see very well, but it looks like it could be perilla, a.k.a. shiso. The one leaf I see the top of is reddish, and shiso is both green and various shades of red. Some are almost round, but others are more pointed, and the serrated edges vary considerably, too.

Need to identify these six greens

Actually, besides being in the same order as beets, it is the same species, but labeled a different "variety" - Beta vulgaris (don't remember the variety!). Surprisingly, the chard has non of that flavor the beets have, that I can't stand!

    Pi(?) for dinner 3-14-2023

A couple times now I've made some tostadas, using that lentil/greens mix, I made a few days ago. I just spread the mash on one of the toasted tortillas, along with some cheese, topped with another tortilla, and some cheese, then heated in the MW on a lower level, then tore a couple of leaves of...

What's your weather like right now? 2023 Edition

We might get to 40° today - a little over 10° above average! And the wind is wicked - over 20 mph sustained, and 30 to 40 mph gusts! At noon they were saying that the wind chill was 28°. I'm glad I didn't put my trash cans out last night - I just put a bag out at the curb, and weighted my cans...

    What are you doing?

@blissful I saved that recipe, and I'll be waiting for your taste test of that pepperoni! I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but I'm always looking for interesting recipes like this. And the author says they, like myself, "really don't like beets", but it doesn't taste at all like beets, so that...

What are you eating Sunday, March 12, 2023?

I made a Mexican dish today, started in the Instant Pot with a chopped onion in some oil, followed by some minced garlic and some Mexican oregano, followed by some guajillo and some morita flakes, cooked for about a minute. Then the liquid was added - I had about 3/4 oz of dried tomatoes...

    Today's harvest

Here are the greens I harvested today: Hydro greens, 3-12 Red kale, wisubina mustard, mizuna, arugula on the counter. by pepperhead212, on Flickr As always, the mizuna probably produced the most per plant, though those wizubina mustard greens are doing very well, too, and the stems are not...

What have you had for a snack lately?

Today I made some boiled peanuts to snack on, these I seasoned with chipotles and moritas, plus a little ground cumin and coriander - a spice mix I make for Indian cooking, but I use it in Mexican cooking, too. I also added some dried tomatoes, and blended those smooth with some dried moritas...

What's your weather like right now? 2023 Edition

In this area we had the second warmest January and February on record, but now March has started out colder than average, and miserable, with all this rain - another storm Monday, after a cold day off tomorrow. At least it's not snow! The 10 day forecast finally has some days with 50s, and even...

Last thing that made you smile?

A few days ago I set up 9 of my oldest tomato seeds, to test for germination, and yesterday I saw 3 of the varieties had germinated in 4 days! Still watching them every day, and some old ones are much slower.
