10 pound block of Ghirardelli chocolate

I may have to check that out at TJ's. It's a great deal since their "broken" blocks of semi-sweet chocolate are 3.49/lb. I don't know where I'd keep a block so large, but man is it tempting. I've also started using the Trader Joe's bittersweet and milk chocolate bars (I think they are...

    Favorite Candy?

I totally agree about Jolly Ranchers.....specifically about the square ones at teh checkout stand. I used to love the ones you bought in the bag with the candies wrapped in twisties.....but it's just not the same since they switched from the "brick shaped" to the "barrel shaped". I also love...

Do you use a scale for any kind of cooking/baking?

I have a digital Polder. I don't remember how much I paid, but it wasn't expensive. Got it at Bed, Bath and Beyond (so I used a coupon too!). I love it. I use it for weighing chocolate and butter. Sometimes I buy butter in the one pound blocks, so I cut it and weigh it. I've used it for...

Crockpot help!! Do I have a dud?

Hi....... I recently started doing some crockpot cooking and am in the market for a new crockpot (see my post below)........I have an older Rival 4 qt and while I've had excellent results, the 4 qt is too small for my needs. Anyway, I've been doing a lot of research on crockpots, and from what...

West Bend Versatility Slow Cooker......anyone have it?

With my New Year's resolution to cook more (i bake like a fiend, cooking not as much), I've been making dinner in the crockpot (ideal with a 3 yr old....also I'm starting some part time work so I won't be home as much during the day to prepare for dinner). Anyway, we have a 4 qt round rival...

    Cook's Illustrated Website......anyone subscribe?

I recently started subscribing to Cook's Illustrated Magazine. I also have two of their cookbooks. Does anyone subscribe to the online magazine (the one for Magazine subscriber that gives access to 10+ years of back issues). Was just wondering if it's worth it. It's only $20/yr. Any...

Best Banana Bread I've Ever Had!!!

I finally had the chance to make this recipe. It was delicious. Only change I made was to put in chocolate chips instead of the nuts (i don't like nuts in cakes/muffins.....unless it only in the topping). My dh LOVED it. Laur

    Ice Cream Recipes

Making homemade ice cream is the best. I have the Ben and Jerry's ice cream recipe book and it's the best. (You can also get the recipes online). The recipe calls for uncooked eggs; I dont like the idea of serving uncooked eggs to others, so I've used egg beaters every time.........I can't...

    I'm making chocolate chip cookies

HTC- I have the same cookbook and haven't looked at it in several months. Just today I pulled it out and browsed through it. Now I'll have to try those cookies.

I Might Retire the Kitchen Aid... :-(

Congrats on the phenomenal weight loss. Good for you! Don't retire your KA. I think you'd regret it later on. I was going to say the same thing as Alix.........Police and Fire Depts are also appreciative of goodies. WHen I bake, I usually send at least 1/2 the batch with my dh to work or i...

    Peeled Hazelnuts

I ended up using some chopped hazelnuts to top the cake. I baked the whole hazelnuts, first for 10, then 15, then 20, then 25 min....and the darn skins would not come off. Well, they did, but only in parts. Maybe, i should have done it at a higher temp? Anyway, I'll try it again next time...

I made a hazelnut torte for a party I'm hosting tomorrow night. THe ingredients are butter, eggs, chocolate, ground hazelnuts and nutella. The topping is chocolate and cream. How should I store it til tomorrow......in the fridge or will it be ok on the counter. If i do put in the fridge, i'd...

Thanks! And, boy.....you were all quick to respond! I was just about to take a shower so I could go out to the store. The cake smells really good. I'll post the recipe when I get a chance......it's from Nigella Lawson's How to be a Domestic Goddess. Off to peel my hazelnuts! Thanks again.

    Peeled Hazelnuts

Hi..... I'm making a hazelnut torte for a gathering tomorrow night. It's in the oven as I type. The torte is topped with whole roasted hazelnuts.....the only ones I saw when I went to Trader Joe's the other day were unpeeled. They need to be peeled for the top of the cake. Is there a way...

Using ISO and REC when posting

Either way is fine with me, but if we do want to use the abbreviations, how about keeping a post in the "general" section that defines the abbreviations. The post can be updated as new abbreviations work their way into use so that way there's only one post with all the info......so people don't...

Baked Brie... how long should I cook it?

I'm having the extended family over on Saturday night to celebrate Hanukkah, and I want to make a baked brie. I've seen recipes that range from baking 20-40 min (for the same size brie). Was hoping to find some guidelines from the wonderful cooks here. I think I'm going to slice the brie into...

    EASY Peanut Brittle

Thanks, Allen! If I had a lime in the house, I'd make it now! My DH is working and my son is sleeping so I can't go to the store to get a lime. Dang, this baking obsession. I'll try what you suggested. The recipe calls for water....should i add a bit more water than the recipe calls for...

    EASY Peanut Brittle

OK........I must truly be cursed when it comes to candy making. For those that didn't read my tale of woe regarding my fudge making endeavors.............I tried 2x this morning to make this peanut brittle and both time, the sugar (after melting) re-crystallized. Anyone know what I'm doing...

    What is you favorite appetizer?

Appetizers, as a whole, are my favorite "food group". Nachos, buffalo wings, spinach-artichoke dip, pigs in a blanket, egg rolls, chicken satay, pot stickers..........LOVE EM ALL. My friends used to call me a grazer b/c I nibbled all day long. OH.......can't forget shoestring french fries...

    Christmas Cookie Packaging Idea

I found some stuff in the $1 section at Target as well. I bought about 6 round tins with a blue and white stripe pattern. And, I also bought a few silver metal square tins (without lids). I figure I can put goodies inside and then use cellophane paper to wrap them. I like the photo box idea...

    Audeo.........on being compulsive...not baking related

Audeo....... Unfortunately, my grey hairs (not many, but some) were there b/f my son was born. That's what highlights are for.........LOL. He's generally a very good natured kid, but boy, when he's tired and wants something watch out! Poor kid is starting to give up his nap. He fell asleep...
