Is there anything better than fresh fruit? (Strawberries)

Fresh fruit is almost totally unobtainable in my locality at any time of the year now. The supermarkets have killed off the trade and the growers. All you can get is the blotining paper variety, 24/7 12 months a year. .

I don't know how to cook.

Where exactly are you ? Are you in the continental United States? I think what you need more than anything is a REALLY basic cookbook. That is how I started out, and I have never looked back. I still use it sometimes, because it works. But there is no point in recommending one if it is not...

    Mock Aquavit

I meant I will try some others. I had success with lime shrub and with your recipe, so Mandarine Napoleon next! I am fascinated by your tale. I have been reading a book, "The Connoisseur's guide to Spirits and Cocktails" by David Broom, pub. Carlton Press ISBN 1 85868 837 X. He describes how...

    Carpet vs other flooring

All my carpets are Persian, Chinese, Indian or other Islamic. You can see the wood floor arround the edges. They do not slip if you put them on a proper felt underlay. And most of them are large enough and heavy enough not to move. They can be removed for cleaning if you wish, but I simply...

    I need this Italian recipe!

Cinnamon? Or could it have been a hint of cloves which are traditional? Cinnamon is normally associated only with Venetian cooking (at least in meat dishes, and principally with lamb). Cassis is the blackcurrant cordial that the french mix with white wine for a summer drink. Cassia is a...

    Mock Aquavit

Yeah, it turned out ok. Perhaps a little rough arround the edges, but maybe it will marry down. I left it for 3 weeks, and in the end I decided to dilute about a third with fresh vodka. The flavour is no longer overpowering. It is much as I remember aquavit to be. Thanks for the recipe. Now...

    Looking for Bastilla

b’stilla These two recipes come from “The Moroccan Collection”, by Hilaire Walden, published by Hamlyn, London ISBN 0 600 60584 1, in print. Thoroughly recommended to anyone with an interest in Moroccan or North African cuisine. You can probably get one from Amazon (but use a fake/free email...

Food slicer: does anyone have one?

I have a Cookworks slicer. I use it occasionaly. It is excellent for thinly slicing cold roast beef, edam or gouda, and making melba toast. It is not so good on salami though. Also, the plastic bends when you put enough pressure on it to get the thimg to slice difficult objects. But you will...

    I need this Italian recipe!

Jkath, While TheHummer’s recipe is a good approximation/version of a cappelletti Bolognese filling and has every appearance of being delicious in it’s own right, I do not think that that is what you had. From the little information you are able to give, I would guess that it is principally a...

    Cholesterol

I asked the same question and received some helpful replies. The thread SHOULD be somewhere in the desserts section. But I could not find it. And the new, improved forum will not let me post the transcript which I fortunately saved before the "improvements" took place, so you will just have to...

    Boiling

Exactly what kind of chickens are you talking about? In my locality, "boiling fowl" (id em, old layers and some cocks past productivity) completely dissappeared from the market some 20 years ago. The problem is however, that you cannot REALLY make Coq au Vin with something that will cook and...

    SUGGESTIONS FOR THE NEW SITE

The suggestion was for possibly national sub forums. The suggestion was not to make the community into a pale reflection of e gullet. I do not spend much if any time there. I consider it elitist, while I consider that this forum is by and large friendly and helpful. THAT is the suggestion...
