What is your weather like right now?

I was going to complain, but since I read about your status, Picanis, I think I'll just suck it up. Spring will be here; my crocus and a few daffidils are beginning to stick their noses out, regardless of the weather.

    Hamburger Hot Dish

Interesting how similar this dish is to Dirty Rice," from an entirely different culture. So...if you don't want to use soup, just add stock or water. I knew one fella that used Kitchen Bouquet and Lipton's onion soup, but his sister made sure I understood that wasn't proper. The only way my...

We must say "Farewell" to one of our own.

I'm so sorry I didn't see this sooner. She was such a dear person! She certainly will be missed!

Quick Question: Should Chicken Smell Like This?

I had a high school friend who's father owned a grocery store. The chicken came in big waxed boxes, and it was her job to unpack them and bag them up to be weighed and priced. She hated the job...said they smelled awful! My dad grew up on the farm, and he had to help singe and pluck the...

    Coleslaw one more time

I have a question about cole slaw, Kades. I threw out some really tasty cole slaw...the vinegary kind...the other day because it had been in the fridge for a week. It seems to me, though, that there's really nothing to spoil. I'm thinking it just might pickle, or ferment a bit. What are you...

    Week without a fridge...

cc There are many versions, and no, you just stir in the powdered stuff. Tastes best if you let it sit a while so the jello dissolves, though. It's a great dessert for diabetics, because you can use sugarless jello and fruit and lowfat cottage cheese, if you wish. They make a sugar free Cool...

    Week without a fridge...

We had company last week, and the day they arrived, the house was clean and the food all organized...then the refrigerator died, THAT DAY! Fortunately, the are good sports, and we have an extra fridge and freezer in the garage. It did put a damper on the gumbo, but we still had a huge bunch of...

    Pets

My Mei Yu, a female Siamese, is 16, and not doing very well. She has a cyst on her breast, and the vet said she's too old for surgery. Antibiotics took it down for a while, but not this time. But...she is still eating good, and gets around OK, when she's not sleeping, so we'll hang in there...

    Naked Ravioli

The best ravioli I've ever eaten was made by a grouchy old lady named Mary. She cooked it in chicken broth, then ladled a small amount of marinara sauce over it after it was in the bowl. It was NOT swimming in sauce. The ravioli was so lite and tender it practically floated to my mouth, dripping...

Quiche Lorraine (smokey bacon and eggs pie)

Many, many years ago, when I was expecting my first child, I was very poor and did not have enough to eat. Skipping a lot of boring details, a chef at a private club made quiche Lorraine for me, and it tasted wonderful! I will never forget that kind man.

Assistance with blue cheese dressing requested

You have too many ingredients. All you need is bleu cheese, Mayo or Miracle Whip (my fave), and a little milk to thin it. If you want pepper, add it to your salad after it's dressed.

    ISO - Deer/Elk Recipe ideas

My husband and grandson used to hunt, and I've cooked a lot of venison. You can make Italian "beef" for sandwiches by putting the meat in the crockpot with a beer (or a can of beef broth and a litttle vinegar) and a packet or two of Italian dressing mix (or Italian seasoning.) It also makes...

    Beans & Cabbage TNT

As good as that sounds, I shudder to think what that combination would do to me (and those around me). Crohn's, you know.

    Arugula & Sardine Salad TNT

I love sardines, but Kim has a fit if I even eat them when he is home. He says they smell bad. I never thought of using them on a salad...I might want mixed greens instead of just arugula.

    First Gumbo ideas?

Sounds like you make my kind of gumbo! In Gonzales, where "Uncle Elmer" lived, they didn't put tomatoes in their jambalya, either.

Butter vs shortening for pie crust?

I've had the best luck with butter-flavored Crisco. Of course, lard is wonderful, albeit unhealthy.

How many ways to cook a turkey?

I love deep-fried turkey, and that probably is the best way for wild turkey, which has a very small breast and little else.

What's for dinner? Sat 13th of October

We're having beef'n noodles. Kim is recuperating from back surgery, so I've temporarily reclaimed the head cook title. There's nothing much easier or much better when it comes to comfort food!

I had a stone soup party one time. I furnished the stone and the soup pot, and everyone brought something to put in the soup.

Salad and Bleu Cheese Dressing TNT

You're a lot fancier than I am, my friend. I just add the crumbled bleu cheese to some miracle whip and add a little lemon juice and Worcester sauce. That's pretty similar to yours, actually, as the W.S. has anchovies in it. I love Romaine lettuce. :)

    Sweet potato skin

I learned to love sweet potatoes when I lived in Louisiana, where I discovered that they don't necessarily have to be gooey and covered with marshmallows. I love them baked, with just butter!
