How cheap can you feed someone?

I understand the value of a home freezer for gardeners, hunters, and homesteaders that live out back of beyond but for most of us it’s just another form of waste. Growing up we had an enormous chest freezer that was filled to the brim with garden vegetables, venison, day old bread, etc…. We...

Cooking spray alternatives and how to clean ruined CorningWare?

Seal the stained CorningWare in a plastic bag with a 1/2 cup of old fashioned clear ammonia and let it sit for a couple days. Wash in warm sudsy water with a scrubber sponge and the funk should come off easily. If you have trouble in the grooves and odd spots try a plastic bread clip as a...

How cheap can you feed someone?

Thanks, the article has some great tips and reminders. I’ve been trying to use up all of the odd bottles of condiments, pickles, olives, etc… that tend to accumulate and then, the most difficult part, not replace them! A weekly clean out the fridge day is helpful in using up the odds and ends...

How cheap can you feed someone?

Two more thoughts on this. Don’t set a dollar amount when attempting to determine how low you can go. If you set a $5.00 limit you will tend to manage to that limit when in fact the minimum could be much lower. Managing and shopping to a $5.00 limit for each meal is much more difficult than...

How cheap can you feed someone?

So many variables! Even with today’s higher prices you can fill people up with fairly inexpensive meals but their health may suffer over an extended period of time. Start with something basic like, dry beans, rice, pasta, oatmeal, flour, cornmeal, eggs, etc… and build around it with an...

    Browned cream

The idea reminds me of the old caramel recipes where you submerged an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk in a pan of water and let it simmer for several hours. https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/caramel-sweetened-condensed-milk/9005d4ff-d063-43da-9fc6-509cc50ae771 I wonder if you could...

What are you cooking at the moment?

I had to look it up too! It looks delicious and would be wonderful in late summer when there is an abundance of fresh tomatoes. My family’s simple sauce was based on Marcella Hazon’s recipe. 2 cups peeled and roughly chopped fresh tomatoes with their juice or a 16-28 can of good quality...
