20 dollar thangsgiving dinner... take the challenge...

Debthecook and Mish, you are right. You made points well taken.

I, myself, took the twenty dollar limit as a challenge. I will be with my family this Thanksgiving.

I am aware that there are many, many, many people who will be far away from home. There are people not far from me who left their homes after the hurricane storms of this past summer. Others are not comfortable due to delays in home repairs due to hurricanes. That is in addition to the financially destitute.

While I sometimes wonder what the "poor" do the rest of the year (it seems we only pay attention to them for six weeks in the winter) we must not make light of their plight. I know I have been made "richer" due to the sharing of the knowledge and expertise on these boards.

Blessings to all. Happy Thanksgiving.

Bang.

Would like more info. Is this regarding a family that is limited on funds to try to provide for their family of six on $30.00 or $20.00 for a Thanksgiving dinner, or is this a joke/challenge? I'm not clear here, as you didn't provide specifics. I think it's clear you can't make a Thanksgiving dinner for six on the funds you mentioned.

If a family is in need of monies to help feed their little ones, have a meal, there are government resources to help. I don't find this amusing. Please state what the purpose of this post is about.

Its simply a challenge....no joke.....and yes it is possible to have a Thanksgiving Dinner with limited funds. I grew up that way. Give me a break.

Somehow or other between the title and the first post by the OP the amount got changed from $20.00 to $30.00. Not that it makes that much of a difference but it is 20 years.
a 3 to 5 K frozen Flamingo Turkey at Walmart (Canada) is $17.00 ($12.00 US). Double the price is now $4.00 a K. But if you watch there are sales at holiday times, often at half price.
Brussel Sprouts on sale for about $4.00 a lb.
and so on down the line.... Vegetable are probably more expensive than the bird!

and up here: on Mondays only...
  • 50% off Build Your Own Pizzas: $8.99 on Mondays
  • 2 Medium Pizzas With 6-Toppings Combined & 1 Cheesy Bread: $12.99

A large pizza from Domino's has eight slices.

Unfortunately, Thanksgiving in the US always falls on Thursday. So no such Monday deal here.

My "regular" order at the pizza place here in town is a medium veggie pizza with light cheese. It costs about $21 and has 6 slices. I could probably get some cookies and a 2-liter bottle of soda with the remaining $9.

Happy Thanksgiving kids! Enjoy your slice of pizza! 🍕 😂

LOL, our Thanksgiving is always on the 2nd Monday of October.

But really has nothing to do with the deal for Pizza - that is always a Monday deal to entice people back in on a dead day after a weekend of people ordering out.

A traditional thanksgiving would be difficult for me to do on $20 dollars. I do believe I could do that for $30 bucks. In looking at the local flyer, I can use my grocery points to get a small turkey for 99 cents per pounds for a 10 pounder. $2.50 for a package of cranberries, and an orange for 99 cents. $2.99 for a pound of string beans (sale.) Can of mushroom soup for 1.00 (sale). Yellow onions (2) for .69/each. Potatoe (yellow on sale) 5 pounds for 2.99. Milk for 2.18 for 1/2 gallon. Goya bouillon cubes $1.69. Oreo go-pack $1.50 and Jello instant pudding $1.50.

Now I am going with that I have sugar, flour, salt, pepper, and an egg on hand.

So I would make the turkey. Use drippings to make dumplings (add bouillon for extra flavor since I am not using veggies and aromatics.) Mashed potatoes. A string bean casserole and make my own crispy onion topping. Cranberry orange sauce. For dessert, I would make oreo pudding cups. Nope, it is not going to be the fanciest of meals, but it would be tasty with leftovers.

I put myself through college. Challenges like this are fun for me! If I had ten bucks less, I would do turkey and dumplings, cranberry-orange sauce,, string beans, and an oreo dessert.

Either way, you know I will cook that carcass down for bone broth! (I used my local Giant Grocery to check prices.)

Good Deal! That's a 16.93 pound turkey - good to feed 15 people.
There were other turkeys like Butterball, etc. at different prices but this bin was the cheapest and I felt silly taking pictures of frozen turkeys. 🤭

Using the words "Domino's" and "Pizza" in the same sentence is bit of a reach. ;) :ROFLMAO:

CD

Why? Don't they sell Pizza's in Texas? What about Lil' Ceasar's or Pizza Hut. Domino's is the #1 Pizza Chain in the world.

Maybe start with five loaves and two fishes. 😉

If money is tight my first thought is some sort of potluck, where everyone contributes something.

If that’s not an option I would probably skip the traditional turkey in favor of a casserole of chicken and gravy topped with stuffing, glazed carrots, cabbage salad, cranberries, and a simple dessert like apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.

Before taking my $20-30 dollars to the store I would rummage around in the pantry and freezer to see what possibilities exist and build the final menu around those items.

I love your humor and obvious common sense posts @Aunt Bea .
We're having the layered sw potato and stuffing and gravy and potato with cranberries. I baked the bread, canned the mushrooms and cranberries, and the groceries were probably $10 for 2 of us. No turkey though.

LOL bliss! With all the home canning you do I'm sure you could eat for a week on $20.00! From the Antipasti, the Primo, (yeah, ok, skip the Secondo as that's usually meat/fish/poultry), Contorno (side dish), and finally Dolci.

We went with out a vehicle for a couple weeks. The dehydrated and frozen stuff helped too. And it was summer so wild and unconventional greens too.
