What's on your Menu?? any Traditions?

I don't have any traditions, we used to Celebrate big time as youths & young family. As time went on and husband (ex) had a choice of Christmas or New Years - he chose New Years and had Christmas with family. Most of the young guys did that and the older ones had no problem with it.
So as time went on - I took to making a fire, radio on low, turned ringers off on the phones, got a book and curled up - Perfect way to celebrate New Years and is still my preferred choice.

I've often heard of different dishes some had as traditional on New Year's Day, none have quite appealed to me enough to actually cook anything. Today got this recipe and thought why not... nice and small just for one.

Black Eyed Peas, a Southern thing?

We always have black eyed peas for New Years, along with cornbread. It's supposed to bring good luck in the New Year.

As for traditions, I'll stay up and watch the ball drop (or try to), and probably watch one of the parades in the morning. My cousins will be watching bowl games the rest of the day, and I'll find something to watch on Tubi. The Twilight series is supposed to be on there starting 1/1/25, so I may watch that.

New Years Eve was always one of the big nights being a chef in a restaurant, and years where I wasn't, was either out to dinner with friends or home making dinner for friends. New years day was always a slow day normally huddled around the fireplace, eating lots of different foods and traditionally I cooked duck for dinner.

This NY's eve I will be hosting a dinner party and Jan 1 will probably be another slow day relaxing and nibbling at food. I've already made duck confit, so dinner will be bistro style for just the two of us and a bottle of Pinot we've been saving. :)

I haven’t gone out to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Since 1985! 🥳🍾🎉

In the days leading up to New Year’s I pay any bills, fill the gas tank, do laundry, clean the house and take out the trash to make sure that I give the new year a fresh start.

On New Year’s Day I try to eat a frugal meal, this year I’m thinking that it will be 15 bean soup and muffins.

I also try to see how far into the new year I can get without spending any money.

The idea being, the way you start the year will set the tone for the rest of the year.

Aunt Bea I "sort of" do the same. A girlfriend got me into that cleaning house business, no shopping, eat frugal.
Well, the frugal part was usually left overs if we'd had visitors for dinner the nights before. Way back when we would host a party I would make a huge vat of chili (Canadian style!). So sometimes - not always have enough left over for another meal. Biggest compliment I got was "I just come for your chili." LOL.
I rarely make it to New Year's but if I'm binge watching a show as I have been lately ... well, maybe - but I doubt I'll notice!

My mom was born and raised in NJ, and we always had pork and sauerkraut for good luck on New Years Day. It was pork chops, cooked to the point of shoe leather.

Down South, everyone has black eyed peas.

I plan to smoke a pork butt, weather permitting. I'll have some sauerkraut and black eyed peas, just to cover all the bases.

CD

We always had pork, beans with cornbread, and some kind of greens. Like Aunt Bea, I use to ensure all was in order by New Year's Eve for superstitious reasons. (Yes...I admit to having some superstitious tendencies lingering from childhood!) However, this year, I won't be up and about by NYE....SO....I am at the mercy of others. I sincerely hope that is not going to foretell 2025. 🤦‍♀️ 🙏

We don’t have any traditional new year’s celebration. Just a glass of sparkling wine at midnight, but nowadays it’s not guaranteed that we will make it there!
I too spent decades feeding people on the night at functions. I enjoyed seeing people have a good time, but it usually descended into drunkeness long before the clock struck midnight.

Happy new year to all, I hope 2025 brings you lots of joy and happiness 🫠

New year's eve dinner here, can be anything you like as long as lentils are included in the menu, they bring "fortune and prosperity", tradition dates back to ancient Roman times.
We usually eat them with "cotechino", don't know what that is in English! 🤔 A type of sausage which has been precooked, we need to boil it in its tin foil packaging and then it's ready to be sliced and eaten.

I don't really have any traditions, but usually cook something special. Tonight I'm going to try making the Joy of Cooking Seafood Divan recipe and see how it goes. Car is having issues, so I can't go too far and buy a ton of groceries, and it's also a rent week.

We did the cotechino and lentil meal for a new year’s dinner once in the hotel. It was completely new to a lot of guests but it was generally well received, except for one table who complained that we were serving “peasant” food. 🤬

We might do split pea soup tomorrow.

Tonight it is pizza w/lots of toppings. Vegan sausage I made and some cheeze (not cheese), tomato mushroom sauce, mushrooms, peppers all colors, sliced black and marinated olives, pineapple, caramelized onions. It'll be done in 10 minutes and I'M HUNGRY. Everything tastes better when I'm really hungry.
