Hmm...black eyed peas (https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/213029/new-year-black-eyed-peas/) we had them last year. @Meryl I didn't know lentils could be a yearly tradition, where you live, then why not where I live.
Or split pea soup on new years. https://deliciousonadollar.com/2014/01/02/new-years-split-pea-soup/

I'm guessing at the time the black eyed peas tradition started in the South, lentils were not grown there. Just a guess, but a lot of food traditions changed when immigrants came to America a long time ago, because old world ingredients weren't available here.

Chicken fried steak was what German immigrants to Texas made in place of schnitzel. Beef was abundant while pork... not so much.

I'm getting ready to bake my pigs in blankets (the US version) with Little Smokies and crescent roll dough. I'm not supposed to drink, but I have a mini bottle of Prosecco chilled for a glass at midnight.

I also lit a fire for the first time this winter. It is going down into the 30sF tonight.

I love lentils, @Meryl. We have an excellent Italian grocer near us. If I can find the sausage, I want to try to make that dish. I found a recipe online, but have you one to share?
The cotechino is already pre-cooked, just need to boil it in boiling water, for 20 minutes in its package, then cut open the bag, get rid of the juice and then slice the cotechino, laying it on a bed of lentils. I usually buy dried lentils and boil them myself but I felt lazy this year🤣 and bought a tin of cooked lentils which I sautéed in olive oil, garlic, celery, a little tomato passata and water, just to make them tastier. 🙂
When you eat the cotechino, just scrape off the skin, which is jellied fat.
This is what's left of ours, from last night. I sautéed some broccoli, too. 😀

DD and I had the same brand Prosecco!! Cheers

It was pretty good! Rather dry, but not bad tasting at all. I could only have one glass, but I had it exactly at midnight, and that's what mattered.

Nice fire in the fireplace, good unhealthy snack food, and a glass of Prosecco at midnight. All-in-all, a pretty good NYE. I hope everyone else had a good night, and a good 2025.

I have my 8 pound pork butt covered in rub, and in the fridge for the night. It goes on the pellet smoker tomorrow. My neighbors will be getting some pulled pork, whether they want it or not. I can't eat 8 pounds of meat.

BTW, this is the pork but I posted last month that I bought for 99-cents a pound. Turns out, it was supposed to be $1.99 a pound, but was mis-marked. I didn't know that at the time, but went back the next day for more, and Kroger had corrected their mistake.

Sounds good, neighbors should be very happy to receive some of that😀. We're having pork pot-roast today, cooking time at least two hours, with a chestnut and mushroom sauce.

Was thinking of all our friends we have lost in the past year, RIP.

and thinking of all our friends on DC both near and far.

May this coming year bring you peace in health and happiness.
.... and ahhhh, why not? can we in throw in a wee bit of wealth? and of course, the best and absolutely the greatest good foods!

We always have Hoppin' John on New Year's Day...this is my usual go-to recipe. Quick and easy.

HOPPIN’ JOHN
2 15-ounce cans black-eyed peas
3 cups water
1 large onion, sliced
2 stalks celery, sliced (1 cup)
2 slices bacon, diced
1 teaspoon instant chicken bouillon granules
½ teaspoon garlic salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
¼ teaspoon bottled hot pepper sauce
½ cup long grain rice

In a large saucepan stir together the undrained black-eyed peas, the water, sliced onion, sliced celery, diced bacon, chicken bouillon granules, garlic salt, pepper and bottled hot pepper sauce. Bring mixture to boiling. Stir in the uncooked rice. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes or till the rice is done. Makes 4 servings.

Yesterday, I made Albondigas, as DH has been craving it. Yummy stuff! And there's more for today or the freezer...

that looks very good @GinnyPNW .
I'm not particularly a soup fan but I have some meatballs in the freezer that I'm not super impressed with and that might be just the thing to make them come alive, at least a bit anyhow.
Thanks for posting!

The Danish tradition for New Year's is cod. They have been eating heavy meals on Xmas Eve and Xmas day and leftovers of roast duck and roast pork since then. They figure it's time to have something lighter. I didn't do that. But, since it is still the Yule (jul in Danish) season, I had pork, which I have been told honours Odin.

I had Pork chops Lyonnaise and some Pinot Grigio. I had some of it at midnight.

Is this the dinner thread for today? I had planned to make oyster stew since that is the tradition, but the store I normally shop at was out of fresh oysters and I was too tired after work yesterday to drive 20 miles to the store I know has them.

So change of plans, I made bang bang salmon with baby broccoli and a sweet potato. Not traditional but pretty tasty. Sorry, I didn't take a photo.
