Hi All ~ I’ve only made Chex Party Mix once or twice and used the recipe on the box. I was not too impressed. It seemed to be lacking something, but I’m not sure what. Recently, I saw recipes for this snack made with olive oil instead of butter and fresh garlic instead of garlic powder. The rest of the ingredients are very similar to those in the original recipe. The reviews were positive and I’m going to try making this version soon. Has anyone here ever tried using olive oil and fresh garlic or does anyone have a “secret” ingredient that gives this snack a step up? Thanks for any suggestions.

I’m not in the olive oil in Chex mix camp. Olive oil is not the right taste, IMO. But I’ve not tried it.

Fresh garlic might burn and won’t be equally distributed like powder is. But again, I’ve not tried it

You might consider a pinch of MSG. I add it to my Chex party mix (and to many other things)

Okay, folks! I made Chex mix with olive oil instead of butter and almost doubled the other ingredients, but did not use seasoned salt. I did not use fresh garlic either, but did use the powdered garlic. I also added lots of mixed nuts, Parmesan and pretzel goldfish crackers, and, of course, the cereals. It turned out great and everyone gobbled it up! I think the olive oil added a nice savory element. Also, I did not add any salt — the nuts and crackers had enough. Live dangerously and make a batch!!
