hope this is the right place for this thread ,
have you noticed that you can't buy corn dogs without Honey in the batter any more ?
not that i mind honey , its just that they don't have that crunch anymore , the ones we used to buy before they all went to the honey batter, had a nice crunch when it was deep fried , now they are all soggy no matter how long you fry them

Fletcher's recipe doesn't use honey, or HFCS. It is sweetened with ordinary granulated sugar. Here is how to make your own...

i have tried making them but the batter never sticks to the dog no matter what i do
the wife bought some the other day and i swear i could deep fry those things until they turned black and they would still be soggy

i have tried everything short of using sandpaper on the dogs to roughen up the outer surface in order to keep that dang batter from sliding off :ROFLMAO:
there was a time when you could buy good crunch corn dogs in the freezer section at any grocer , but since they added honey the crunch is gone :(

I always thought Corn Dogs were nothing more than battered sausages/hot dogs on a stick .... never really gave the batter much thought to be honest.

oooh nooo , the batter is the most important part, it has to taste oooh soo good and its gotta have that crunch , i could care less what the dog tastes like :ROFLMAO:

I was introduced to POGO's in 1964 when I moved to Quebec. People loved them - a go to when heading out for a quick lunch.
POGO's = a battered hot dog on a stick. Came with a little cup of mustard to dip into.
Disgusting - that was 60 years ago and I can truly say I have never had one since.

No!

Corn Dogs (AKA: Corny Dogs) are another invention of German immigrants to Texas, around 1927 (patented in 1929). At first, there was no stick in them, but that started at the State Fair of Texas, around 1938. It made the Corny Dogs easy to eat while walking around the Fair.

IMHO, you need Both a good hot dog, and a good batter. (y)

My ex-wife absolutely had to have a Fletcher's Corny Dog at the State Fair of Texas. That was her "must have" food. I'm not a big fan of Corn Dogs, but Fletcher's are pretty good.

I lightly floured my hot dogs before adding the batter. Like flour/egg wash on milanese to help panko stick, I find it helps the batter cling.

what i see as the problem with the store bought ones is the honey , it keeps them from getting crunchy , leaving you with a soggy dog on a stick
i don't have anything against honey ...just not in the corn dog batter
the old one didn't have honey in the batter and were crunchy

According to the Fletcher's website, their Corny Dog batter does not use any honey. They still use sugar for sweetness. They are not the easiest to find in stores outside of the Dallas area, but you can get them online ($$$$).

Goldbelly is a website that sells things that are hard to get anywhere but where they are located. Their prices are stupid high.

People often confuse State Fair branded Corn Dogs with the Fletcher's Corny Dogs at the State Fair of Texas. State Fair Corn Dogs are a Tyson brand, and they do have "honey" in the ingredients, which is probably the fake stuff made with HFCS and artificial honey flavoring.
