Crispy Homemade Hashbrown Potatoes

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that enjoys cooking.

i prefer the Baby Cakes for 2 reasons. One, they get crispier than the larger ones because they have more surface are to toast and get crisp

2ndly, a serving is 4 so I can eat 2 or 6 or whatever i want. With the larger ones, you are committed to that one size/amount.

Just remembered I have some of these

That's kinda funny. I call those home fries. I searched for them at Métro and at Voilà. I got something similar, but it says home fries on the bag, not hash browns.

Yes, I call them home fries as well. And that's what I had for breakfast. I'm all out of these what I call hash browns...

Even though the bag says Hash Browns I didn't actually specify in my post. Just put in the picture. ;)
Actually I've usually called them galettes but that confuses people in Ontario.

I was actually commenting about the oddity of McCain calling them both.

You would confuse me if you just said you had galletes. My first thought would be buckwheat crepes, Bretonne style. But, if you said, galettes de patates, I would know what you meant.

don't know what other folks call them but to me any potato that is shredded and fried is a hashbrown , i was always nuts about "waffle House " hashbrowns and this is the the only way i have been able to copy them

I agree that a shredded fried potato is a hash brown, except when it is a latke. Or maybe a latke is a form of hash brown potato. And, the Swiss have something very similar called a rösti

Waffle House does have amazing hash browns. Now I need to make something with potatoes for breakfast really soon. Or Dragn can come make me breakfast! I do have a guest room!

Y'all are making me hungry for Waffle House. They are open 24 hours, but the nearest one to me is 30 minutes away.

30 minutes, ha! I just checked. For me it's almost 6 hours, with a toll, through Ontario and New York state to some town in Pennsylvania. Or, I could avoid the toll and take about 6 1/2 hours.

I can see a difference in all three - each name calls up different memories, at least for me.
But then again.... never really met a potato I didn't like. :)

It's about 40 minutes for me.....I have made the trip.

Come on, Andy and Dragn. What happened to the days of the glorious road trip to find your own personal Mecca?

Never liked Waffle House. We stopped there when driving to FLA. Only once. That was enough for us. We like Cracker Barrel, Perkins, IHop, Denny's or Shoney's better.

I'm okay with Cracker Barrel, but the others have to be the only option available. I wouldn't make a special trip for them, but will for WH's hash browns!

@msmofet I have to share this: Your comment reminds me of my friend's WH experience. Between the wild customers and location of the one (and only) visit she had, she left terrified. We love to get her to tell us about it. The best part, the police would not exit their car or roll down the window more than a half-inch to tell her that she may wish to reconsider where she stopped her car. (She was traveling, needed gas and was hungry plus it was late.) She doesn't remember the hashbrowns...or even if she got hashbrowns. 🤦‍♀️ Poor thing.

I've done road trips but not for waffles or hash browns.

I've driven 2 hours + for a certain steak and cheese sub in Gloucester, MA. I've driven 4 hours+ to Portland, ME and back for a certain Italian sub.
