I know that there is a type of pepperoni called cupping pepperoni. And I know that when I remember to put it on Himself's pizza last, the edges of each slice get a little burnt and tasty. Maybe that's where the term comes from?

Yeah, I have worked in pizza places for last 10 years and only yesterday heard the term. I guess it's in reference to pepperoni curling up then burning. Not all pepperoni curls, but apparently enough does.
